HIDING POEMS are dedicated to my Grandpa Sol’s tailoring services he did while captive in concentration camps. He carefully sewed very small, hidden pockets into coat lapels to secure priceless heirlooms on the bodies of those held captive, heirlooms that would otherwise be stolen. As a tailor, his skills afforded him to survive the Holocaust through offering Nazis sewing labor in exchange for crusts of bread he would give his cousin. I like to imagine that he would've liked to sew messages to his family or others in his vicinity, as communication or encouragement for survival. When the war was over, he continued to sew hidden pockets for travelers and went on to open a tailoring shop in Wisconsin.
